How Rivets Work

Rivets are a type of fastener that create a permanent connection between two materials. While there are multiple types available to support a range of applications, all feature three main components — a cylindrical shaft that is inserted into a pre-drilled hole, a fixed head on one end and a tail that, using a special tool, is “bucked” to expand in diameter, fastening it in place.

Rivets offer exceptional strength compared to screws or other fasteners, and better cost-effectiveness when compared to welding. While older rivet designs required two people to install, blind rivets can be fixed in place by a single operator. Common applications for fastening rivets include everything from sign making to aircraft and aerospace manufacturing.
