Applications for Copper Screws
For many projects, screws function better than nails because they are stronger and have much greater holding power. If you are assembling an object that may be taken apart later, screws offer the best fastening solution. Most wood screws are fabricated from steel. However, buy copper screws for any situation where there is a risk of corrosion. As a fastener, along with corrosion resistance attributes, copper screws are especially effective and when it comes to great strength and high electrical and thermal conductivity. For industries where bacterial infections are concerned, copper functions as an excellent antimicrobial material, including the medical, marine and sanitation sectors.
Copper Plated Roofing Screws
These fasteners have a coarser pitch — and that means fewer threads per inch, compared to sheet metal or machine screws. Typically, copper metal roofing screws have an unthreaded shank, which allows the top piece of the wood to be pulled flush against the lower piece without being caught on the threads. Your copper screws supplier should also have available copper wood screws that are tapered from tip to head.
In contrast, sheet metal screws, which can be used in wood, are usually threaded all the way to their head. They are self-tapping. Some sheet metal screws require a pre-drilled hole, while other screws have self-tapping tips.
Common Copper Screw Heads
Decide on which screw head works best for your project, including slotted, Phillips and square drives. A combination slotted-head wood screw can cause power-driven screwdrivers to cam-out. Phillips head screws work better, but the purpose of Phillips screws is to make the bit cam-out at a particular point to avoid over-torque. The square, or Roberts drive, mitigates the cam-out issue and transfer the greatest amount of torque.
For some home improvement project and other applications, the specifications may require the use of cooper screws or some other type of copper fastener. For copper roofing and copper flashing, copper screws are the right choice because it provides an attractive solution that is long-lasting and very eco-friendly.
Discuss your fastener needs with your copper screws supplier. Your vendor should have an extensive range of copper screws for sale, as well as other screws, bolts, nuts and washers for your upcoming project.
If you are considering the use of copper screws, make sure that the fasteners are appropriate for the project. Case in point, copper wood screws are superior to nails for fastening down decking and other uses. However, copper screws may not be suitable for framing and structural applications, such as attaching joists (metal connectors).
Increasingly, more manufacturers are bringing structural copper screws and other structural fasteners solutions to the marketplace. However, most building code books address the minimum requirements for nail fasteners.
